Annual Conference Returns to Kiawah Island Resort
Call for Proposals
Interested in sharing your successful practice or research? Propose a 45-minute concurrent session on the conference theme of “Images, Imagination, Innovation.” The proposal deadline is October 1, 2008. Notification of accepted proposals will be no later than October 15, 2008, and confirmed presenters must register by November 15 in order to recieve the reduced rate.
Split P Soup Organizes South Carolina Young Poets Prize
Split P Soup: Poetry for the Community, under the umbrella of the South Carolina Poetry Initiative, announces the South Carolina Young Poets Prize for the best group of poems written by teens. Winners receive cash and prizes. Deadline for submissions is October 31, 2008. (more)
Congratulations to Carol Sprott Jackson, SCCTE Teacher of the Year. She was honored at the NCTE annual convention in November and was recognized at the annual SCCTE conference in January. A nationally certified teacher of high school English, Mrs. Jackson currently teaches at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo where she is head of the English department. A member of the district curriculum council and language arts leadership team, Mrs. Jackson is also the task force chairman for study skills standards. At the state level, she is involved with the HSAP review committee and school accreditation committees.
South Carolina English Teacher The 2007 edition of South Carolina English Teacher is now available online. The eight articles and an array of voices represent stimulating ideas and
practices for our classrooms. Contributors include Frank Serafini, Julia Lopez-Roberston, and Kelly N. Tracy. A Call for Articles for the 2008 edition and links to past issues may be found on the SCET page.
Carolina Writes is a publication for South Carolina students in grades K-12. We are now accepting submissions for the 2008 edition. Invite your students to submit poems, short stories, essays, or memoirs. See the Carolina Writes link for more information.
Watermelon Shoes is a blog spot in memory of Dr. Eve Coleman, former president of SCCTE. Her daughter, Jennifer Coleman, has established a memorial fund in celebration of Jennifer Coleman and Jonathan Leit's wedding. The money raised by the Fund will be used to provide treatment to underfunded breast cancer patients who are part of the Breast Health Navigator Program. Check it out!
The South Carolina Council of Teachers of English is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement of English and language arts instruction in South Carolina. Members include teachers at all levels—kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, college—as well as administrators, students, and retired educators. The South Carolina Council of Teachers of English is an NCTE affiliate.
