Conference Theme: Out of the Silos: Literacy in a Transdisciplinary Age
Students are saturated with information in every aspect of their school day, and lives. How students make sense of that information influences what they do with that information. Do they make connections across content? Do they create change? Do they problem-solve? Do they gain perspective? More than ever before, teachers need to help students use reading and writing as a means for transacting with any type of information.
Literacy is power, and English educators play a key role in helping students to develop their reading and writing skills so that they can effectively use those skills in and outside of the English Language Arts classroom. No longer is literacy isolated to the English Language Arts classroom, but intentionally blended across content for acquisition of new information.
We encourage proposals that address how English educators collaborate and partner with other content educators to build opportunities for students to authentically use literacy to transact with information. We also invite proposals that address how we can change our teaching of reading and writing to best meet the needs of students today and ensure learning is out of the silos. Partner with content educator(s) to share with us what works in your classrooms. We urge proposals that include educators of science, social studies, mathematics, arts, etc. to partner with the English educator as presenters.
We also offer an additional research strand for presenters who would like to share original research with an interested audience. This is an ideal strand for doctoral students and college and university faculty to share their work. Please check Research under the Topic(s) of Emphasis if this description fits your proposal.
Session Information: Concurrent sessions are 45 minutes in length and will be scheduled either Friday, January 26 or Saturday, January 27, 2018. All proposals will be acknowledged by email when received, and those submitting proposals will be notified regarding their proposal’s status by November 10, 2017. Program participants must pay the conference registration fee by December 20, 2017 in order to present at the 2018 SCCTE Conference.
PLEASE NOTE: Each room will come equipped with only a screen. Individual presenters are responsible for bringing all other necessary technology (laptops, LCD projectors, etc.). These items will not be provided.
This year we will also be offering an additional format, poster sessions. Poster sessions offer opportunities for participants to interact with presenters and ask questions in a less formal and structured environment. Each presenter creates a poster, summarizing and explaining his or her work, and is prepared to discuss the work and answer questions. This is a terrific format for both sharing classroom practice and sharing research projects and may be ideal for pre-service teachers and graduate students to share their work as well.
